Shades of Blue, Antarctica
Jon McCormack,2019
The intensely blue core of a melting Antarctic iceberg reveals dense ice that has been compressed over many years by the weight above it, forcing out the air bubbles that would normally scatter light. With fewer bubbles, the ice absorbs more of the longer wavelengths of light and reflects the shorter blue wavelengths more strongly. The photograph shows the internal structure of older glacial ice exposed as the iceberg melts.
