Austin Mann is an accomplished artist whose photographic work explores the movement, meaning, and power of light itself.
Austin Mann is an American artist whose process employs observation and innovative technology to showcase the resplendence of the natural world. Best known for his landscape imagery, Mann continues in the tradition of Emmett Gowin and Richard Misrach, but he also cites influence from wide-ranging sources including the work of his early mentor Paul Bowen, collaborations with cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and the paintings/writings of Makoto Fujimura.
Continuing themes throughout Mann's work include his investigation into the science of light, exploration of time—both in extended and on-the-move exposures—and examination of humanity's interaction with the environment. Austin Mann was born in 1985 in Wichita, Kansas. His interest in imaging tools began early, playing with his father's cameras, scanners, and Photoshop. He then mowed countless lawns to earn money for the purchase of his own iMac by the age of 12. Mann shifted focus in 2005 when he came to faith and directed his attention to photography compelled by light's power to penetrate darkness.
After a life-changing trip overseas in 2006, Mann chose to pursue a career in photography, working at National Geographic Adventure Magazine and then at McCann-Erickson Advertising in New York. Mann finished his education and then took his first photography project working in nine countries across the world, building a body of work and honing his artistic focus (fun fact—his father traveled as his assistant for the project). Since then, Mann's work has taken him all around the globe including partnering extensively with Apple on their Shot on iPhone campaign, Yo-Yo Ma's Bach Project and Our Common Nature Project, and Hasselblad. Additionally, he founded WELD, a shared studio and workspace for creative professionals in Dallas later expanding to Nashville.
Mann's work is held in various private collections spanning more than 20 countries and 6 continents. Mann holds a BA in Film & Digital Media from Baylor University (2008).
